Should weld seams on 316L be passivated if they will be painted?
Part of a 316L frame will be painted, the rest stays bare. Do the weld seams under paint still need passivation?

Clean and passivate before painting regardless. Residual heat tint under paint becomes a hidden corrosion site once the coating is damaged, and paint adhesion on contaminated stainless is unreliable. Passivate first, then coat.
